We held our first service for Mothering Sunday in March 1993, at Stukeley Meadows School. In June that year, the monthly services began, in which the Church of England, Methodist and Baptist Christians worked together, sharing skills, insights and encouragement. The signing of the Local Covenant inaugurating Stukeley Meadows United Church took place on 5th February, 1995. In 2000 it was decided that "United" should be dropped from common usage although it remains in the constitution.
During the next 11 years, under the pastoral guidance and leadership of 3 different ministers, an enthusiastic (though never enormous) congregation continued to meet for worship on a regular basis. However the situation changed in April 2006 when our then minister, Rev. Martin Kettle, was moved on to a new parish with no possibility of being replaced in the forseeable future.
The church Membership voted to keep the church going, relying on visiting ministers and preachers to lead the services. Though few in number we all worked hard to maintain a weekly Sunday service, but moved to monthly services in May 2008, in recognition of the fact that the work load and responsibility was too great for a handful of lay people. We agreed to continue with a service on the 1st Sunday of each month for a trial period of 6 months.
On 16th October 2008 we met to review the situation. After much prayer and thoughtful discussion we reluctantly reached the conclusion that it was time to cease holding services. This means that our last service will be held on 7th December 2008. It is our hope that this decision will create an opportunity for another Church to take over the mission of providing regular public Christian worship and witness for the residents of Stukeley Meadows estate.
Our Home Group is, however, strong and vibrant and is set to continue. This enables us to meet regularly to share a time of prayer, worship, study and fellowship.
